Fall Tree Sale

With all the hot weather lately, maybe now is a great time to plan to add more shade trees in your yard.  Fall is actually considered a better time to plant trees than spring, and it always helps to add some new trees and shrubs to the landscape each year to continue to enhance the natural beauty of your community.  The Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) offers people an opportunity to help support community tree planting efforts by providing a quality source of midsized container trees and shrubs at reasonable costs.  Orders need to be submitted to the District by Wednesday, September 22nd!  The trees will be available for pickup on Saturday October 2nd from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in the northwestern part of the county.  Mark Kautz, Chair of the local Conservation District says, “The tree sale offers a great way for our SWCD to help people care for their land and plant more trees for a healthier and greener Marion County”.

The sale includes primarily native trees and shrubs that enhance the landscape, and also assist in attracting wildlife.  The District’s Fall Tree and Shrub Sale includes over 14 different varieties of trees and 9 different shrubs to choose from.  The sale is available to any interested central Indiana resident.  All the details about the SWCD’s tree sale, including the order form, the tree pickup location, etc, is in the tree sale brochure.  The brochure is available on the District’s web site at www.marionswcd.org or by calling the SWCD Office at 317-786-1776.  Depending on species, container trees and shrubs in the Fall Tree Sale are available in 1, 3, and 5 gallon sizes.  Prices are $18 for the 1 gallon size, $25 for the 3 gallon, and $32 each for the 5 gallon size.  The prices include sales tax.  The order deadline for the tree and shrub sales is September 22, 2010 and some species are limited, so order now!  The tree brochure also includes the size & list of species available, tree & shrub species facts, and plant selection ideas.

The “America Forests” organization recommends residential areas have about 60 percent canopy cover when the trees mature.  Canopy cover is that part of the ground surface under tree cover.  This high level of cover offers many benefits, including reduced air-conditioning costs as the shade provided by the trees cool temperatures around the home, a higher quality of life that happens in the lower temperatures of tree-shaded property, and the important benefit that homes surrounded by trees and shrubs are usually worth 20 to 30 percent more than homes without trees.  So make your investment in the future today, and order some trees and shrubs for your yard and your local community areas.
